A valiant railway staff member who intervened to save travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a express train has sustained life-threatening injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.
CCTV footage reportedly depicts the employee trying to stop the assailant as the train traveled between a city and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers running through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have since been discharged from medical care.
A bystander recorded the suspect waving a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced officers on the platform. He was reportedly heard yelling, "End my life, end my life."
âThis was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families â particularly the courageous employee of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained officers,â stated a high-ranking law enforcement officer.
Train unions were swift to praise staff and call for increased measures. A union leader stated he would be ârequesting immediate discussions with government, train companies and police to ensure that we have the strongest available assistance, resources and robust protocols in placeâ.
Another association leader urged the train operator and government âto act quickly to examine safety, to support the impacted employees, and to ensure that no incident like this happens againâ.
The train driver who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being âdeeply affectedâ but âwellâ, and has been commended by union officials for doing âexactly the right thingâ.
âThe driver did not stop the train in the center of two stations where itâs obviously difficult for the first responders to reach, but he carried on going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much already there,â explained a union official.
Police stated they received the initial emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted initially thinking if the event was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from people's expressions that it was real.
Police have stated there is nothing to indicate the event was a terror-related attack and have requested the public to provide with any further information.
Train operations on the impacted line are expected to experience delays until the following day, with travelers advised to postpone their journeys where possible.
