The key suspect in the widely publicized disappearance of the young British girl has been released from a German prison, where he was completing a prison term for an separate crime.

Christian Brückner was driven out of jail by his legal representative. He remained out of sight in the vehicle, but police stated his departure from the detention center.

Brückner was convicted of raping an elderly woman in the Portuguese resort in the mid-2000s and will be required to wear an electronic monitor after his exit.

The German national, in his late 40s, has never been charged with offenses in relation to the disappearance. He denies any involvement.

Case Details of the Incident

The young girl disappeared in the holiday destination of Praia da Luz in 2007. The children had been asleep in a rental unit while her mother and father, the McCanns, were dining at a nearby restaurant.

The case has grown into one of the highest-profile open disappearance cases in the world.

Probe and Evidence

German prosecutors have cited data—including mobile phone records—indicating the suspect may have been in the vicinity when she vanished, and have repeatedly insisted that they believe he is the perpetrator.

Yet, they have not found sufficient evidence to bring charges.

Brückner, who resided for long periods in the Algarve, was a transient, a minor offender, and a convicted sex offender. He has several previous convictions, among them sexually abusing children in 1994 and 2016.

Recent Searches

Authorities from both police conducted a new operation between where the McCanns had been staying and addresses linked to the suspect in June this year, but this yielded no breakthroughs.

Brückner was present in the region between 2000 and 2017 and had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir.

Legal Challenges

Months ago, Brückner was cleared of unrelated sexual offences by a judicial body, which were said to have occurred in Portugal between over a span of years.

Because of variations between judicial frameworks, German authorities suspect Brückner of homicide in relation to the case, while British police continue to treat her case as a missing persons matter.

Financial support given to the Met's investigation has totalled more than 13 million pounds since 2011. A further £108,000 was approved from the government in April.

Madeleine McCann went missing in the previous decade, then aged 3 years old.
