During a recent trip to Tokyo, former American leader Donald Trump together with Japan's new Prime Minister Takaichi shared friendly praise and pledged to strengthen the already robust two-way ties.
Trump commended Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ leader and congratulated her on becoming the nation's first woman prime minister. During their talks at Tokyo's official venue, Trump voiced confidence that she would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of the country.
Takaichi, identified as a close associate of former Prime Minister Abe, praised Trump's initiatives to address global conflicts and reportedly pledged to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.
Both governments announced a series of collaborative projects in sectors such as power, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. Japanese companies are considering investments of up to $400 billion in the United States.
Additionally, Tokyo had previously committed $550 billion in long-term US investments, loans, and guarantees as part of an arrangement to secure exemption from Trump's tariffs.
Such moves are viewed as potentially easing any future requests from the US side for Japan to increase its defense spending. Takaichi responded to this by promising to fast-track plans to raise defense spending to two percent of GDP.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Trump said to Takaichi. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he added.
This meeting underscores the continuing importance of the US-Japan alliance and paves the way for additional collaboration on economic, security, and foreign policy areas.
