The world mourns the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and actor whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. The artist has died at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit brought him a large and loyal following.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
