Jose Mourinho Expresses Interest in Benfica Managerial Position

Jose Mourinho has expressed keen in taking over as the next head coach of Benfica, following the exit of Bruno Lage.

Background of the Situation

Lage was relieved of his duties after Benfica experienced a surprising 3-2 loss to Qarabağ in the Champions League.

Club president Rui Costa mentioned that the club aims to name a new coach before the weekend, though he refused to speculate on individual candidates.

Reports suggest that Mourinho is willing to a return to Portuguese football, more than 20 years after he departed for Chelsea FC.

Mourinho's History with Benfica

Mourinho began his coaching journey with SL Benfica in the year 2000, though his stay was short-lived, lasting only 10 matches.

He subsequently achieved prominence with FC Porto, guiding them to multiple titles, including the Champions League in 2003–04.

Since then, he has coached top clubs across the continent, including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, and Fenerbahce.

Possible Challenges and Matches

If hired, Mourinho would confront his ex- club Chelsea in the UCL on September 30.

The team is also set to meet Newcastle and Real Madrid in the group stage.

At present, the club sits sixth in the Liga Portugal, five points behind table-toppers Porto.

Election Background

The move to change Lage coincides with forthcoming club votes on 25 October.

Joao Noronha Lopes, the frontrunner, has reportedly shown preference in Ruben Amorim of Man United.

Costa emphasized that the decision was taken exclusively for sporting purposes and not for political benefits.

"I am not here to save any positions," Costa said. "The goal is to secure the optimal future for the club."
