Keir Starmer Escapes Diplomatic Trip Bear Traps, Yet Did He Shift Trump’s Outlook?

Amid potential political hazards avoided and little drama on display, the UK leader will likely be satisfied that his joint appearance with Donald Trump bolstered his assertion to be the United States’ leading partner in security, trade, and now tech innovation.

President Trump, in return, reportedly secured the “great pictures” he wanted and maintained subdued conduct.

He stated that he was largely aligned with his host in many areas, except Starmer’s plan to grant Palestine statehood. Moreover, he came close to tactful rhetoric—until he advised that Starmer deploy military personnel to halt migrant vessels crossing the English Channel.

Behind-Closed-Doors Talks May Hold the True Measure of Impact

But the hour-long off-camera discussion between the statesmen will serve as the true indicator of whether Starmer managed to leverage this second state visit—featuring all its pomp—to alter any of the US president’s perspectives.

The British PM, known to identifies shared interests with Trump in public, likely used that valuable private moment to argue that Russia’s president cannot be trusted and that Israel’s leader demonstrated poor decision-making.

Israel-Palestine Conflict Seems a Sticking Point

On the topic of Gaza, judging by the public remarks, Starmer did not succeed. Trump nodded when a journalist stated that he was “the sole individual in the world capable of preventing the destruction of Gaza City, ending the starvation in the region, and putting an end to the civilian casualties.”

In response that he would not forget the attacks on October 7, and emphasized that his key condition is for the militant group to surrender every hostages in a single gesture.

That said, Starmer and Trump are not completely at odds, as the broader Middle East now supports plans for a post-war Gaza administration excluding Hamas. This position is expected to be reinforced at an forthcoming United Nations meeting next week.

Rebuilding Efforts and Political Alignment

The president is also privately supportive of the collaborative blueprint by Jared Kushner and the former UK PM for Gaza’s reconstruction, which ensures local residents are not displaced of the area. Mass expulsion, recalling the historical exodus, would likely be rejected by regional powers and would conflict with ideas put forward by Cairo, France, and the United Kingdom.

The PM’s difficulty is persuading Trump to publicly endorse concrete measures and making him see that allies may develop their own stability plans if he seems to outsource his regional strategy to Netanyahu.

War in Ukraine Reveals Some Common Ground

Regarding the Ukrainian crisis, there could have been greater agreement. Trump, sounding disappointed, stated he felt “really let down” by Putin and conceded that the war had proven harder to end than he had anticipated.

Starmer refrained from saying that Trump’s earlier optimism had been unrealistic, but he argued that Putin’s recent targets showed a new “recklessness” that required a stronger reaction.

“It’s essential to apply pressure on Putin,” Starmer declared. “It is only when the president has exerted force against Putin does he shown any willingness to move.”

When pressed on whether he was willing to apply such measures, Trump said, “I’m willing to explore alternatives,” adding, “But not when the people I’m fighting for are buying oil from Russia.”

Oil Imports and Geopolitical Leverage

Considering Trump’s frequent lack of awareness, it is conceivable he only recently discovered that certain EU members—such as Slovakia and Hungary}—still import Russian oil. Even so, it provided a convenient excuse not to impose the trade restrictions he vowed on Beijing for importing Russian energy.

The one thing the UK leader cannot afford is for Trump to disengage from the conflict. Thus, he and Europe must act quickly to accelerate efforts to halt the supply of Russian oil to Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has already committed to advance the timeline for ending purchases of Russian oil and gas, shifting it from the original target.

The PM has an opportunity in that Trump agreed that reduced oil prices would hasten Putin’s willingness to negotiate.

Following the recent visit, King Charles and Starmer can only hope that Trump is nearer being convinced that if he moves beyond sanctions and actually implements them, he can make Putin realize that his alternatives are truly closed.
