New Year's Revelers Told to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Throughout the UK

Forecasters are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," stated the national forecaster.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are due to be low, meaning warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Advisories Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
