A key creative force behind the iconic survival game is crafting a comeback into game development. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it expands the ideas of his past achievements prioritizing characters that learn and adapt.
Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. Players control a seasoned spellcaster, a hero that subverts typical power fantasies. This central concept came from an interest in re-examining the typical hero’s journey.
"Consider a scenario where you didn’t have combat prowess? What if your character was not built for battle? What if you’re a little old lady?" mused Straley. "I thought it was really fascinating to question the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about fighting your way through obstacles, including traits like sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."
While the game looks different at first glance, its most significant advancement is a direct continuation the character dynamics seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception was inspired by a key thought: "How could one create Ellie even more reactive and adaptive based on player actions?"
Your strange critter partner in the game transcends typical AI behavior. It is essentially a toddler which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. First, it exhibits curiosity, which can cause unexpected chaos. Next, it enters a playful state. Finally, it observes and assimilates comprehending the world's rules.
This complex system is designed to create a unique story for each player. The director emphasizes that the game will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience instead of a traditionally structured narrative.
"Each effort to insert rigid narrative turns into this game, the magic dissipated," Straley explained. "The core appeal between these characters lies in the fact that you as a player experiences different sparks and narrative compared to my playthrough."
By prioritizing player-defined experiences, the new title signifies both a continuation and a bold new direction from the director’s well-known franchises. This adventure is currently being built for computer systems.
