Trump Demands Imprisonment of Windy City Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

Trump's statements come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, despite strong objections from state officials including the governor and mayor.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to back down. Now Trump is demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the path to complete autocracy?"

As of midweek, military units from Texas had reached the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its hardline crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite police data indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, including homicides.

That day, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard personnel readying for deployment, according to sources. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were arranged in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities imposed no-fly zones over the military base for security reasons until early December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, particularly near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action against the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also issued an executive order on Monday banning ICE officers and related personnel from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged Trump of using troops as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that Trump is trying to "justify and make acceptable the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, the president has stated he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which allows a commander-in-chief to send active duty military in states that are unable to put down an uprising or are resisting national authority.

Since starting his second term, Trump has sent or discussed deploying troops to at least 10 urban centers, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and protect ICE officers.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime across the US has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were reduced nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to police data.

New survey data published on that day revealed that most Americans disapprove of the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
