Synthetic images claiming to show Nicolás Maduro in custody after his apprehension by the American authorities have gained many millions of views online.
The first fabricated AI image apparently showing him taken off a plane circulated a brief time later. The graphic was unpublished by any official US channels; rather, it was posted on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was created or altered with AI tools.
More synthetic pictures started circulating in the following hours, purporting to present additional perspectives of Maduro in custody. Discernible identifying marks on these images indicate they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.
The detection tool confirms these additional images were similarly produced using AI technology.
Donald Trump posted the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. Yet following the authentic image was made public, AI-generated pictures persisted online but were altered to include the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Digital forensics indicate the new fake images were first posted on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Once again, the AI-watermark detector says these subsequent pictures were produced with generative artificial intelligence.
